Innovation and Promotion Benefiting Second Screen According to Canada Media Fund

Innovation and Promotion Benefiting Second Screen According to Canada Media Fund

Broadcasters, producers and their advertising partners who invest in research and development, as well as in extensive promotion of their second screen apps, will benefit the most from this rapidly growing market. This is just one of the conclusions to be found in The Second Screen and Television — Production and Deployment, which completes a series of white papers exploring the second screen phenomenon and interactive TV apps.

After the first two papers that study the growth perspectives, benefits and impacts of various initiatives employing second screen to complement TV shows, this final entry takes a look at the most innovative practices in the areas of production, deployment and optimization of second screen installments and social components. Through these innovations, TV fans can live an extended, enriched experience that goes far beyond broadcasts.

Citing several concrete examples, the report also concludes that:

  • The second screen market has moved substantially from the monetization phase to the retention phase
  • Second screen is offering a growing number of exclusive opportunities for sponsorship and branding for partners
  • Advertisers are increasingly interested in geolocated behavioural data generated in real time by second screen technologies
  • Premium second screen applications are currently among the most profitable second screen business models generating the most economic benefits.

“This third report is a concrete culmination for anyone interested in second screen and considering a deployment in the short or medium term,” explains Gilbert Ouellette, Evolumedia Group CEO. “Readers will better understand the ground-level strategies of stakeholders in the added-value chain and learn from practical examples of applications associated with various types of television content in Canada and elsewhere.”

“The complete Second Screen and Television series of research reports is an invaluable tool for producers and television broadcasters who want to develop a multi-screen strategy. The three volumes cover everything needed to understand the concept of second screen, related costs and opportunities to do business and build partnerships between producers, television broadcasters, and advertisers,” notes Catalina Briceno, Director of Industry and Market Trends for the Canada Media Fund.

The Second Screen and Television — Production and Deployment white paper is available in Canada in English and in French on Canada Media Fund’s website. Initiated in 2012, this series is a co-publication of Evolumedia Group and the Canada Media Fund, in collaboration with the Société de développement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC).

Taking place this coming Monday, April 15, the move is highlighted by the launch of new programming, the hiring of new on-air talent, and a renewed commitment to telling the grassroots, local stories in both provinces.

“The rebranding of Global Maritimes into Global Halifax and Global New Brunswick demonstrates our continued investment in creating a state of the art news operation centred on local reporting,” says Troy Reeb, Senior Vice President, Global News and Station Operations. “This move caps off what has already been a successful period of growth in the region and represents the importance we place on providing timely and poignant community coverage.”

This separation of Global Maritimes into Global Halifax and Global New Brunswick will move both stations away from being an amalgamated regional news source to focusing more on local stories in both areas. Global Halifax and Global New Brunswick will continue to maintain a close relationship by sharing newsgathering and reporting resources, including the use of Senior Anchor Ron Kronstein andMeteorologist Trevor Adams in both markets.

This award-winning broadcast team will continue to produce two different, locally-focused Evening News casts for viewers in Halifax and surrounding areas, as well as for those in New Brunswick. On Monday, April 15th, the team will replace the current one-hour regionalNews Final at 11pm with a local 30-minute News Final newscast for both stations. Continuing to air at 11pm, Global Halifax’s News Final and Global New Brunswick’s News Final will feature hyper-local news and content as well as local weather forecasts tailored specifically to audiences in both provinces.

To augment this New Brunswick focus, Global News has also hired esteemed broadcast journalist Shelley Steeves to be the station’s newSenior Correspondent. Based in Moncton, Steeves will travel throughout Global New Brunswick’s provincial bureaus to bring viewers timely stories and content on the Evening News and News Final casts. The recipient of several national and international journalism awards, the Moncton, New Brunswick native brings over 18 years of broadcast experience to the Global New Brunswick team. Prior to joining Global, Steeves was a Reporter and Producer for CBC News Moncton as well as the Atlantic Bureau Chief for the Weather Network.

“Shelley brings a wealth of reporting experience to the Global New Brunswick team, and we are pleased to have her on board in this pivotal new Senior Correspondent role,” says Jim Haskins, Station Manager & News Director. “With Shelley joining the team, Global New Brunswick will be in an even better position to report on the breaking news making waves across the province, and dig deeper on the investigative pieces viewers care most about.”

On the heels of the launch of the newly-designed, Global New Brunswick feature an augmented web component designed to focus on all relevant breaking news. Central to this expansion will be the addition of a full-time web producer to file exclusive stories’s New Brunswick community portal.
