Never mind the aimless finger pointing, put the heat on that Directors. Chlorostridium Diffficile is too easily spread from lack of meticulous cleaning…….and amazingly I have witnessed that once elderly patients are infected there is reluctance to administer Vancomycin as it is too expensive. I found that pretty shocking and there again, the Director ought to be on top of it. I will add that my own Mother was infected three times on the same floor in the same hospital, and twice we were told there was not hope…..I took my own cleaning supplies and gowned up and cleaned her room daily. Very sad it came to that. Oh yes, she survived.

Thu, 25 Apr 2013 07:14:52 +0000 http://tvloon.ca/?p=3549#comment-1312 ,Royal Columbian Hospital, in New Westminster close to Vancouver BC, is a major trauma hospital serving hundreds of thousands of people is totally inadequate, dirty and dangerous and after several unhappy stays there I have come to the conclusion that it must surely be the worst hospital in all of Canada! During an outpatient procedure, they injured my pancreas. When ambulance brought me back to emergency three hours later, I was left on a gurney right by the main, outside door, in winter!, for two days and two nights. The noise, the cold draft from the constantly opening double doors,, the stress of all the trauma cases arriving right beside me, the glaring lights 24/7, the severe pain of pancreatitis, absolutely no care or attention of any kind except for an IV drip and monitors, no peace or quiet day or night were unbearably torturous
to the point that I thought the only way out of my misery was to go home and die. When I went to the desk to inform them of my decision they took pity on me and put me in a janitors' closet for three more days and nights. Needless to say this was a working janitors' closet with lights on 24/7 and LOUD janitors going about their jobs of banging cans, carts and equipment, and transporting spare desks, chairs, cabinets, beds and God knows what else 24/7. However, the worst part was that the ONLY bathroom serving this huge, overcrowded ER was a mile away and always occupied and I had diarrhea. To make it worse, I had to unplug all my monitors etc. and plug them all back in when I returned, irregardless of how severely ill I was. I had to clean myself up the best I could with paper towels in the filthiest, overused, never cleaned, third world type bathroom that had more excrement on the floor than where it belonged. To be sure, with my severe diarrhea, I contributed my share of filth and germs to this hell hole I was in. In five days that I was in this so called ER I did not consume a drop of water, or any food because that is part of the regimen for treating pancreatitis and I understood that. What I didn't understand is that in those five days I was NEVER given a sponge bath or had any help in dealing with my severe bowel distress and my personal hygiene. My filthy gown was never changed. Nobody cared for me in any way except for taking my vitals. The specialist who caused me all this misery came to see me on the fourth day for about ten seconds and had nothing to say to me, no bedside manner, no humanity,no explanation, no nothing. I could have been an old suitcase just lying there, no difference. Then there was finally a bed available for me upstairs. An orderly wheeled me to the ward, told me that someone would come to put me to bed and left me sitting in the wheelchair in the dark. I waited and waited, but nobody came. Why didn't I put myself to bed? Because it was turned up to its highest position, more than a meter off the floor and I couldn't climb up on it and I couldn't for the life of me figure out the electronics to let it down. But, having learned in the previous days that whether I survived this hell was totally up to me, I persevered with the bed and poked around it until I found the hidden panel with new buttons to figure out. And I did it, pain, pancreatitis dark, fear, disbelief and all. I lowered the bed, plugged in all my equipment into the appropriate recepticles as if I'd been doing it for a living all my life, put myself to bed thinking that I must be having a nightmare… and nobody was the wiser. In fact, I was there for ten more days. The ward was co-ed, the bathroom was swimming in pee, nobody ever mopped even though I asked the cleaner when she mopped the room floor. It wasn't scheduled. Ever! Somehow I survived. Somebody else didn't…….

Also in this day of computers why is it they don't seem to keep files on patients that come through the emergency department..I have an illness that takes me quite frequently to emergency and they never keep a file i get asked the same questions every time even after i had surgery there.it makes no sense. You can take your car in for an oil change to the same place each year and they remember you and your car why can't the emergency department at the hospital do the same. One more point never be fooled that taking and ambulance to the emergency will get you in faster cause in my experience they just put you in a wheelchair and plop you back in the waiting area so what if you just payed 400 dollars to get there by ambulance. All nurses in the emerg ward should be rotated every 3 years cause it burns them out and they loose focus on why they became a nurse in the first place.

I see dirt under beds and hand washing don't seem to matter much to most people. I think a loud speaker message should be repeated every 20 minutes telling people that infections can lead to death, to their death!! and hand washing can prevent this. I think if people associated their own mortality with hand washing they will be more apt to wash their own hands to protect themselves. I live in St. john's NL. I won't even go into the long wait times we have to endure, that is another issue.
